6200 Redstone Gateway

Summarize the project's program, features, and achievements: Located in Huntsville, Alabama 6200 Redstone Gateway is a newly completed 6 story office space. This project involved 177,578 SF of total floor space with 29,357 SF of the space being slab on grade and the remaining 148,221 SF slab-on-metal deck. An elevator pit was incorporated into the office space which consisted of a 12” reinforced pit slab installation along with 8” CIP walls. In total, 50 tilt-up panels at varying thicknesses of 9 ¼” and 16” were cast and erected. The resulting wall surface area was 59,635 SF with the tallest panel measuring 73” tall. Upon completion, this LEED certified project has provided great office space near downtown Huntsville to bring in more up and coming business to the area.

What obstacles were overcome related to the schedule, budget, program, specification, site, etc. on this project? Original assumptions of panels during bid process versus final panel design outcharted the original crane which required us have to increase the crane size and capacity. Working through this budget change with the owner was a challenge since it was a large cost increase. another obstacle was bracing the top stack panels to the mezzanine. This required additional coordination efforts from the engineer, general contractor and other subs to accomplish.

Please communicate any engineering complexities or unique features of the panel design for this project. ? Making the return legs of the panels monolithic created complexities with lifting and crane size. Cantilevered panels in the corner created unique details for lifting and bracing. Stongbacks that were required for lifting were an obstacle during the lifting process since there was no pourback strip. The strongbacks had to be removed while the panels were still vertical prior to being set in place.

What is the potential for this project's impact on the community and/or environment? This project was a LEED certified project which made it a more environmentally conscious construction. The building also provides large office 8 space near downtown Huntsville bringing more businesses to the area.
