Built in only 20 months, this three-building school campus consists of athletic, vocational and classroom structures totaling approximately 250,000 square feet. Although Tilt-Up panels with integrally-colored concrete were selected for schedule reasons, the method also offered economy and aesthetic freedom.
The two colors of concrete for the Tilt-Up panels, chosen to complement the area’s sandstone hills and red soil, were further embellished by using different depths of sand-blasting, creating color variations and textures on individual panels. This project was not only a challenge to design but also to build. The panels varied greatly in geometry and many spandrel and cantilevered panels were used to accommodate entryways and large openings. Sandwich panels were used in some locations for exterior walls areas that required a durable wall surface such as the gymnasium, wrestling room, cabinet shop and welding shop. Because of the project complexity, each panel was elevated to ensure architectural and structural stability.
The end result is an efficient, cost-effective campus that serves more than 1,500 students.
