Creepy Things in Panel Design

November 11-12, 2022 Central Standard Time

Karen S. Hand, PE

Needham DBS was called to investigate cracks on a building after years of issues. The building had a history of failed panel to slab connections and significant bowing in the panels. At the onset of the investigation, the mindset was that either the interior slab was moving, or the exterior paving was moving, causing the dock panel to slab on grade connection to receive a tension force large enough to fail the connections. This presentation will discuss the investigative approach and process for conducting root cause analysis as well as strategies for mitigating external loads on panels.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • How to Approach an Investigation
  • Recognizing Root Cause Analysis
  • Understanding Expansion and Contraction
  • Mitigating External Loads on Panels

  • If you have any questions, please contact the TCA at (319) 895-6911.
