Union Middle School is a Canyons School District facility located in Sandy, Utah. The impressive school has very little tilt-up visible from the exterior, but it is featured prominently on the interior corridors, gymnasium, the auditorium – the level of craftsmanship is displayed up close as a final finish. The tilt-up is not hidden or disguised but featured and celebrated for what it is. Due to mason availability and cost volatility, the design team selected tilt-up for significant parts of the structure rather than creating a traditional all-concrete-block structure.
The school continued construction through a record breaking winter and overcame unprecedented labor and materials shortages. The tilt-up sequencing was extremely difficult and complex; complete 3D modeling of the lifting process and every brace location was critical in executing the project.
