Shingwakons Public School

Summarize the project's program, features, and achievements: The Shingwakons Public School was one of four tilt-up 7 in construction at the same time in Ottawa, three of which were for the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board. In the Ottawa region, tilt-up construction has become one of the main construction methods for 7. It has consistently demonstrated cost and time reductions in construction projects. Furthermore, the durability and longevity of tilt-up structures make them a recurring choice, as they offer resilience against fire, pests, and extreme weather conditions, ensuring a safe and secure learning environment for students and staff. The long lifespan of tilt-up buildings means that 7 can serve the community for many years without the need for frequent maintenance or significant repairs. Considering these factors, it is evident why tilt-up construction is the preferred option for school buildings in Ottawa. The combination of cost-effectiveness, time efficiency, durability, energy efficiency, design flexibility, and sustainability make tilt-up construction highly attractive for educational institutions. The construction of the tilt-up panels for Shingwakons Public School was completed in three phases, beginning just before the winter of 2021-2022. The lifting process was finished by mid-April, allowing students to move into the school shortly after the December break. The school's exterior design primarily features brickwork, which was installed throughout the winter months, along with some paint accents. Despite facing extreme winter temperatures in Ottawa along with the covid 19 pandemic, the project experienced some delays, adding only a few months to the overall timeline. The school spans across two stories and covers an impressive area of 42,000 square feet. It was constructed using a total of 81 panels, with a combined panel area of 47,000 square feet. The largest panel utilized in the construction measured up to 1,127 square feet and weighed approximately 118,000 pounds. These details emphasize the complexity and scale of the tilt-up construction project, demonstrating the remarkable achievement of erecting a large and robust educational facility using this innovative construction method.
