With its old gym outdated and demolished years earlier, the Mount Pleasant community was looking forward to it’s new 26,086sf facility for many years. Designed to house two full-size basketball courts, four side-to-side basketball courts, four volleyball courts, or four pickleball courts, this new 16,266sf gym floor serves the needs of the town’s vast recreational programs. Insulated sandwich panels were used to create a low-maintenance hardwall on the interior of the gym, weight rooms, and lockers. Typical panel thicknesses varied between 12” and 16” to accommodate deep returns at the windows as well as 4” recessed areas. Reveals wrap around the entire building, while also defining areas for two blends of cast-in thin brick that matches surrounding Town buildings. A spandrel panel bridges the Main Entrance to the gym, and includes a custom weave textured formliner. Openings were also left in panels for accent glass blocks to be placed after erection. Locating this building in the center of the Town’s campus created a few obstacles for construction. With only one side available for crane access, the building needed to be phased and lifted in a critical sequence. The backside of the building required blind lifts with the Town’s athletic fields and fencing being incredibly close. With more panel area than slab area, panels were stack casted and a small temporary casting bed was built. Field assembled, 100’ wide, 7’ deep girders were built on top of panels while the crane worked its way out of the building. The end result was an impressive product that showcased what Tilt-Up can accomplish and provided Mount Pleasant an incredible space to be used for many years.
