Extreme Engineering Solutions (X-ES) is a fast-growing company that builds custom, heavy-duty computers and parts for manufacturers and the military. The building concept is of two juxtaposed tilt-up enclosures, one for office functions and the other for manufacturing. The space in-between is captured for use by common functions, including the guest lobby, meeting rooms, and employee lunch room. The tilt-up walls on this interior lend a great effect of permanence to these spaces. The dramatic cantilever at the building front addresses the street and provides shelter at the entrance. It is aided structurally and visually by the support of the tilt-up walls beneath with allowed economical construction. The program requirement of a high number of private offices led to the introduction of natural light via lightwells that parallel the working open office spaces within. X-ES is the recipient of a Wisconsin Focus on Energy award, which recognizes practices that reduce energy waste in the facility.
