The Honnen Equipment Company needed a building that met both the industrial and administrative needs of the company. The structure is composed of gray concrete panels that are accented by staggered, integrally colored black concrete panels. The walls are stepped both vertically and horizontally to add vigor to the building's appearance. All of the panels are sealed to provide a durable, lifetime finish. The Honnen Equipment building now stands as a 60,000-sq.-ft. tilt-up office, warehouse, and shop building all in one.
Architectural tilt-up concrete was the absolute best material with which to build a structure that has the look and feel of an office building with all the functionality of a shop and warehouse. One of the benefits of building with exposed tilt-up concrete is that it will never require paint. Hughes does not believe in hiding the concrete, but in celebrating the raw material; this means that the tilt-up panels must be executed with utmost care because there is no way to hide mistakes. Inside, the polished concrete floors provide a unifying aesthetic with the building's exterior.
