Komatsu Corporate Facility

Overview

The new 102,000 square foot, $10.6 Million dollar Komatsu Facility not only sells, services and assembles large mining equipment, but is also the regional office headquarters. The building has 32 foot tall ceilings and 22 foot by 22 foot over head doors. Skylights and lightly painted interiors provide an abundance of natural light. There are (4) 15-ton overhead cranes and (1) 30-ton crane, not to mention several jib cranes. The service bays have thick heavily reinforced floors in order to accommodate large equipment. Tilt-up construction was used for durability, cost efficiency, and speed of construction.

Concrete provided a building that is harmonious to the construction industry and the Komatsu brand. It has excellent sound and fire qualities and is designed to withstand wind and seismic forces. It is both durable and attractive and will also be easy to maintain.

Features

Every inch of the building was carefully thought out in order to meet the demands of Komatsu and to minimize waste. Tilt-up concrete was selected for its durability and its speed and economy of construction. Simple geometric shapes were used for the exterior design. There is a 2-story interior office area and a two story vaulted entry area. The building is a mixture of high end corporate finishes and state of the art industrial space. Each have an abundance of natural light, open space, and a healthy sustainable working environment.

Recognition

The Komatsu Facility received an excellence in design award from the American Concrete Institute.

Additional information

From an engineering standpoint, the building was constructed to a high standard in order to meet the expectations of the owner. Floors and wall panels where properly reinforced and cured in order to eliminate cracking. The interior has a 32 foot clearance and wall panels are 36 feet tall, (which is almost equivalent to a four story building) and only 8 inches thick . Floor slabs are 6", 8" and 10" thick, and reinforced for the applicable loads.Pits and other areas which would retain water were designed with a higher reinforcing ratio in order for the concrete to be water-tight and for cracks to be self healing. A durable concrete mix was also utilized throughout.
