ABC Distribution Center

At 978,981 sq.ft., the ABC Distribution Center located in Hialeah, Florida, is one of the largest Tilt-Up structures in Florida and the largest Tilt-Up project undertaken by Tilt-Up subcontractor Tilt-Con Corporation to date.

Tilt-Con, headquartered in Altamonte Springs, Florida, erected the 349 panels needed for the ABC project in just 12 weeks. The job was completed in June of 1999, at a cost of $30 million.

General contractor for this project was Codina Construction of Coral Gables, FL. Architects were Cartaya and Associates of Fort Lauderdale, FL, while the engineering firm was Jenkins and Charland of Coral Gables.

Dayton Superior accessories and bond breaker were used.

Tilt-Con's work on this mammoth building resulted in a warehouse floor that meets an FF50/FL50 profile required to accommodate the plant's equipment. Panels measuring 46'6" were formed and put into place to enclose the first and second stories of the office wing as well as the warehouse, which has a lofty clear height of 32 feet.

The 746,281 sq. ft. warehouse includes 66 docking stations, and the building allows for an additional 81 docking doors if future expansion is necessary.

The ABC Distribution Center is not relegated to the class of concrete boxes like its cousins built in the early days of Tilt-Up. The design of the building includes diversity as well as unity.

For example, each of the four entrances to the structure has a unique design: one features a one-story entrance canopy in a burgundy color, another two-story canopy is blue, a third entrance features a rounded design in gray, while the fourth is a column-supported two-story entrance in a terra cotta color. This diversity helps to break up the huge size of the building, while horizontal white stripes running through all four entrances unify their design.

The long walls of the building are tri-color, ranging from khaki at the lowest height up to beige and then to sand color. Tall white rectangular box shapes superimposed on the khaki color surround the entrances. In the middle, beige-colored stripe, square transom type windows allow light to enter the entire building. And the sand color section at the top seems to blend the top of the building into the sky.

Beautiful Florida landscaping, including outdoor gathering and picnicing areas for employees, complete the humanizing design of the structure.

The result is a dynamic looking building with a distinct personality—an inviting place to work and do business.
