Camelot Business Centre

This project was the third phase of construction in a 22- acre multi-phase business park in Nepean, Ontario, a suburb of Ottawa, Canada's capital city.

Developer was the Colonnade Development Corporation of Nepean. Stoneng Construction Consulting Corp., a division of Colonnade, was both general and , Tilt-Up contractor. Architects were Dunlop Farrow Architects of Ottawa and engineers were Steinbicker Associates, Dayton, Ohio.

Camelot Business Centre consists of two single story office/retail buildings of 9,600 and 7,200 square feet, respectively.

Construction began in September, 1992, and was Colonnade's first exposed aggregate project. Completed cost was approximately $60 per square foot.

To select the appropriate finish a number of sample panels were cast with different aggregate (granite to limestone) and with varied amounts of pigment. The selected finish was an exposed natural limestone (1200 kg/m3) with black integral pigment in the concrete 5% pigment (by weight) to portland cement. The retarder was a deep etch Preco "tuf-cot" grey.

Panels were 15' high x 20' wide with window openings of 7' x 17', and were 7 1/4" thick.

Fall 1992 was cold and wet and made the exposed aggregate process difficult. To overcome the problem of rain and moisture activating the retarder, all forms were caulked and covered with individual tents made from light-weight wooden trusses covered with plastic.

Panels were lifted with a Krupp 120-ton hydraulic crane.

With projects of limited floor space, Colonnade has found that a large crane centrally located is more efficient than multiple moves with a smaller crane.
