This unique project presented interesting challenges to overcome. The existing building remained operational through the first phase of construction, which limited site access for cranes and concrete placement. This was a design-build project which utilized insulated architectural panels. We were required to pour multiple casting beds due to the lack of usable slab. The addition of four new racquetball courts with full-height and full-length panels required precision panel placement due to the weight and close proximity of the panels themselves. The second floor included a mezzanine with a structural steel, pan-filled metal deck as well as a running track that surrounded the basketball court. The exterior work on this project included multiple board-formed planter walls. After our work on both the interior and exterior of the building was presumably finished, the owners added a tilt-up concrete viewing area which connected to the existing masonry structure. This addition required the following changes in order to complete the project: a new casting bed, separate crane mobilization, and strategic maneuvering and implementation to conform with the existing structures.
