The St. Louis College of Pharmacy RAS delivers 190,000 SF of spaces that support the entire student – from residences to athletics, mental wellbeing to physical fitness, career counseling to events and collaboration. The RAS is a key to reinvesting in STLCOP’s urban campus located in a growing academic medical center. The vibrant, walkable, and transit oriented CWE neighborhood supports the mixed-use vertical building as a model of identity for the campus. It spatially links to the adjacent academic building with interlocking, cantilevered volumes framing a new gateway entry to the campus. The arrival plaza is part of a new campus landscape defined by a connective network of event spaces and meaningful experiences including a memorial garden, pharmacy quad, and commons bridge. The building seamlessly fuses a wide-range of uses, while honoring the critical divisions between quiet study and active collaboration, restful sleep and athletic activity. Athletics include a competition gym, intramural gym, fitness center, running track. The 375-seat dining hall is an inviting, flexible multipurpose space. The student center provides a critical transition between active spaces below and residential floors, with their privacy and security requirements, atop the building on floors five through seven. A hub of collaborative space connected by a vertical landscape of themed stairs integrates diverse programs at the corner in an expression of visible activity. This public space is wrapped in glass as part of a strategic gradation of materials that define the skin of the building. Private zones are articulated with brick faced precast panels while fritted glass creates a transition from solid to transparent. Inside, colorful furniture and wall graphics strategically animate a simple palate of light and dark surfaces wrapping dynamic, multi-story spaces.
