OK, Boomers: it’s Mentor Time!

By Michael Frew, President, Tilt-Up Industry Leaders of Tomorrow

It seems that everywhere you look these days, boomers are getting tons of flack and eye rolls from today’s younger generation. Whether this is deserved or not, what is certain is that boomers hold a wealth of information that may be passed on to the next generation. In fact, this is something they are doing—by the concrete load—thanks to the TCA’s newest resource: the TILT Mentor Program.

The TILT Mentor Program is a leadership initiative organized by TILT (Tilt-Up Industry Leaders of Tomorrow) that is focused on enhancing the growth of emerging leaders by pairing each of them with a seasoned, tilt-up veteran. This one-on-one setting provides a unique opportunity to share experiences, knowledge, and guidance on personal and professional levels. From the feedback we have received, it is evident that these relationships benefit both the emerging leaders and the mentors.

The program initially kicked off in January 2022, and organizers have been adding to and modifying the program over the past year to better suit TCA’s mentors and emerging leaders. The tweaks have paid off as participation has grown from 15 pairs to 27! Emerging leaders are invited to select their mentors after reviewing mentor profiles, which clarifies commonalities and creates stronger teams while also establishing buy-in and engagement from the start. Monthly meetings, typically done virtually, keep the program on track, and the self-directed nature of the program allows each pair to pick the topics that offer the best fit. Participation has included jobsite foremen, engineers, project managers, architects, product suppliers, specialty contractors, company presidents, and directors at the C-suite level. The program is open to all TCA members.

Program Highlights

  • Exclusive one-on-one development program for TCA members
  • Custom pairing selected by each emerging leader
  • Self-directed, monthly meetings (virtual is great!)
  • Six-month commitment with lasting professional and personal impacts
  • Opportunity to develop a new, long-lasting relationship with another industry leader
  • Benefits for both mentors and emerging leaders
  • Vital investment in our industry’s future

Registration for the upcoming session in fall of 2023 will open to both mentors and emerging leaders in August. If you’re able to attend TCA’s convention in Tampa, Florida, we invite you to join us at an exclusive, program-kickoff event on September 18, 2023. The convention will provide mentors and emerging leaders with a great opportunity to meet in person.

The TILT Mentor Program offers an exclusive opportunity for mentors and emerging leaders to invest in both the future of our industry and in your own professional development. We hope to see your name on the registration list soon!
