TCA Introduces Tilt-Up to Central American Audience

Virtual workshop organized through TCA’s Mexican Advisory Board draws 180 participants from 11 countries

Guatemala City provides the setting for TCA’s expanding educational outreach in Central America, where an August 20 virtual workshop drew participants from across the region.

The Tilt-Up Concrete Association’s Mexican Advisory Board extended its educational outreach into Central America on August 20 with a virtual introductory workshop presented in collaboration with the Instituto del Cemento y del Concreto de Guatemala (ICCG) and with support from the American Concrete Institute (ACI).

Led by Mexican Advisory Board president Jorge Figueroa Silva, the two-hour program drew 180 participants from 11 countries. Engagement remained strong throughout the session, with a median attendance time of 110 minutes.

Guatemala accounted for 119 participants, followed by Mexico with 40 and El Salvador with 10. Participants also joined from Peru, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Chile, Puerto Rico, the United States and Tunisia. The audience included 81 engineers, 32 architects and 32 students.

The workshop also attracted participation from organizations across the design, construction, materials and ownership sectors, including Cementos Progreso, Robertson Industries, Ware Malcomb, Walmart, Grupo AG, Cemex, Grupo Precon, DISA El Salvador, Ixora IMC, Holcim and Crocsa. Fifty-seven percent of registrants used a corporate or institutional email address.

The program introduced participants to the history and advantages of tilt-up, system considerations, safety, codes and certifications. It also addressed seismic behavior and panel-to-roof-diaphragm connections, particularly relevant considerations for the region.

The workshop represents an early step in the Mexican Advisory Board’s effort to expand access to tilt-up education beyond Mexico and build relationships in markets where the system has not yet established a significant presence.

ICCG plans to make a recording of the program available through its YouTube channel, extending the workshop’s reach to a broader regional audience.
