Inside Utah’s Tilt-Up Success Story

Union Middle School, featured on the East Valley tour, demonstrates how Utah’s design and construction community is using tilt-up construction to create durable, high-performance learning environments while celebrating concrete as a finished architectural material throughout the building’s interior.

Over the past two decades, Utah has emerged as one of the most influential tilt-up markets in North America.

The region’s design and construction community has consistently pushed the boundaries of what is possible with site-cast concrete, producing projects that combine architectural ambition, construction efficiency, and long-term performance. During the past five years, only Texas has received more Tilt-Up Concrete Association project awards than Utah. On a per-capita basis, few markets can match the concentration of award-winning tilt-up work found along the Wasatch Front.

This October, attendees of the 2026 Tilt-Up Convention and Expo will have an opportunity to experience that success firsthand.

Four curated project tours will take participants beyond the Salt Palace Convention Center and into the campuses, schools, innovation centers, corporate headquarters, athletic facilities, and commercial developments that have helped define Utah’s reputation for excellence. Along the way, attendees will gain insight into the design decisions, engineering challenges, construction strategies, and collaborative relationships that continue to make the region a proving ground for architectural tilt-up construction.

Featured on the West Valley tour, Deseret Peak High School showcases how tilt-up concrete can serve as both structure and architecture, with exposed architectural concrete celebrated throughout the building’s major interior spaces.

Featured on the South Valley tour, Telos U demonstrates how tilt-up construction can respond to complex site and program requirements, delivering a five-story facility that combines academic, residential, athletic, and administrative spaces within a compact footprint.

South Valley: Corporate and Commercial Growth

Visit corporate campuses, office environments, specialty facilities, and commercial developments that highlight the growing role of tilt-up in supporting business expansion and architectural expression.

A unique aspect of this year’s program is the shared gathering at West High School, where participants from all tour routes will connect over a hosted lunch before continuing to their afternoon destinations. The experience creates opportunities for attendees to exchange observations, compare project experiences, and engage with fellow professionals from across the industry.

The projects featured on this year’s tours represent the work of many of Utah’s most accomplished architects, engineers, contractors, and specialty concrete professionals. Together, they tell the story of how a relatively small market became one of the most influential centers of tilt-up innovation anywhere in the world.

For many convention attendees, project tours provide some of the most memorable and valuable experiences of the week. They offer a chance to move beyond photographs and presentations, experience buildings at full scale, and engage directly with the people and ideas behind them.

Registration for the 2026 Tilt-Up Convention and Expo will open soon, and project tour selections will be available as part of the registration process. Capacity on each route is limited, and several tours are expected to reach capacity shortly after registration opens.

Attendees interested in participating should plan to register early to secure their preferred tour experience.

Additional information about each tour route, including featured projects and participating project teams, is available on the convention website.

For those looking to understand why Utah has become one of the most influential tilt-up markets in the world, these tours offer a perspective that simply cannot be replicated inside a conference room.

The tour program is the result of extensive collaboration among the Salt Lake City Host Committee, participating project teams, and the Convention Tour Subcommittee, led by Dan Pratt, FTCA, Senior Vice President at Hughes General Contractors. Their efforts have helped create a tour experience that highlights the depth, diversity, and innovation of Utah’s tilt-up community.
