Growing Pains

Español | Translation Sponsored by TCA

The current state of the tilt-up concrete market, from volume and opportunity standpoints, is the best it’s ever been in my lifetime. If you are wanting to get into the tilt-up design and/or construction market, now is the time. The market demand for this great product is at an all-time high!

This huge tilt-up market demand is great. Whether you are a new tilt-up contractor or an established tilt-up contractor who has been in the business for decades, you can easily bid on tilt-up projects and be awarded as much tilt-up work as you desire.

Bidding and being awarded the tilt-up work is the easy part right now. After being awarded the work, you then must perform and build it. This performing and building of the tilt-up product is the hard part and you are going to feel these growing pains once you start the preconstruction process!

These industry growing pains are the worst I have seen in my lifetime. You may easily find yourself getting an award on a tilt-up project, and then start the procurement and preconstruction process only to discover you can’t get the concrete material you need, the tilt-up brace and lift design is 8-10 weeks out, reinforcement shop drawings to fabrication is 8-10 weeks out, the manpower needed to make the construction schedule is short in every trade that is required to build a tilt-up project, and you may learn that there are no braces available to brace your tilt-up panels!

Beware of all of these growing pains before you commit to bid and build any tilt-up project. What you don’t realize when you are bidding on a tilt-up project can really harm you when you begin to construct the project!

The best way to learn about and help solve these growing pains is to get involved with this great organization of people called the TCA!
