Contractor Introduces NJ Students To Design-Build Tilt Wall Construction Process

Stevens Institute of Technology Students

Students from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ spent a Saturday with two construction experts learning the basics and benefits of tilt-up construction. Bob Murray, Vice President and General Manager at Alston Construction and Gary Pascoe, Eastern Manager of Thermomass provided an introduction to the concept of Design-Build Tilt Wall construction to a master’s level construction management class at the school.

The brainchild of Professor Ellyn A. Lester Assoc. AIA, the construction lecture series provides the students an opportunity to gain a realistic perspective on the theories being taught in the classroom. The tilt wall lecture is the first in a series of events planned with the students at Stevens Institute. During the lecture, the students got to see the tilt-up construction method utilized on a project from design inception to full buildout and completion. Alston VP/General Manager Bob Murray provided hands-on experience for the students, allowing them access to work through the different phases of a real project. “We are providing each of them the design and construction documents utilized on a real Alston project,” said Murray. “The students will have the opportunity to see what goes into the planning and logistics, as well as how a schedule is built and executed.” While the focus is tilt-up construction, the students will also learn how a project is built from the foundation to roofing system.

In September 2015, students from Stevens Institute will be involved in the 2015 Tilt Up Concrete Association annual meeting in New Brunswick, NJ. While attending the event, the students will participate in a community service project commemorating Hurricane Sandy heroes and victims, outdoor demonstrations and education seminars. They will have the opportunity to network with key players in the industry.
