Tilt Lab, the philanthropic partner of the Tilt-Up Concrete Association, has connected Washington University’s Pablo Moyano, assistant professor of architecture, and the design team of Eric Sterner and Brad Lang of LAST Architects to explore an architectural potential for tilt-up concrete construction while celebrating the culture and landscape of Arizona as part of the 25th Tilt-Up Convention and Expo to be held in Phoenix, Arizona, on October 9–11, 2024.
While the project is in its early stages of design, the team is exploring themes related to the use of local materials in forming panels, including the potential use of soil and rock as formwork. They are also examining how these materials can inform and become the surface of the panels, integrating elements from the region directly into the construction.

Another theme under consideration is erosion, a natural force that has shaped many of Arizona’s most recognizable landscapes. The design team is exploring how the concept of erosion could influence the geometry of the panels and the interaction of light and shadow within the structure, aiming to create spaces that resonate with the natural beauty and history of the region.
Central to this exploration is the expertise of Guillermo Valdez and his team at Suntec Concrete. Their experience with using organic materials in tilt-up construction provides valuable insights into the practical application of these methods, including how the use of soil and other natural elements can align with the efficiency and economy of tilt-up construction, which allows the method’s advantages to be maintained while exploring new creative possibilities.
Explorations like those included this project do not often translate into immediate real-world applications, and sometimes they might not find a direct application at all. However, the value of these explorations lies in their ability to push boundaries without the burden of immediate practicality. By venturing into new territory, these exercises expand the potential of what can be achieved, shifting the perception of what is possible.
Rather than challenging the core principles of tilt-up construction, this project seeks to exploit the method’s inherent strengths, discovering new ways to utilize its efficiency and versatility. By exploring unconventional materials and forms, the team aims to reveal innovative applications that align with what tilt-up does best: creating durable, cost-effective structures with a high degree of flexibility. This approach not only respects the natural capabilities of tilt-up but also expands them, finding new possibilities within its established framework.

Attendees at the 25th Tilt-Up Convention and Expo will have the opportunity to engage with this artistic expression firsthand, gaining an appreciation for how such exploratory efforts have historically shaped the construction techniques and capacities that are now standard. By experiencing this process, attendees can recognize the continuous evolution of the industry and the importance of pushing creative and practical limits to expand what is possible. This project illustrates the ongoing dialogue between theory and practice, reminding us that innovation is not a linear process but a continual exploration that bridges ideas and real-world applications.
