TCA Sustaining Member Spotlight: LJB INC

“What are we doing to save money for tilt-up building owners?”  LJB Inc.’s Facilities division aligns its time and resources around this single question. Whether it’s delivering structural engineering on our first tilt-up building in 1971, offering the CON/STEEL Building Program for self-performing contractors since 1986, or our recent endeavors into design-supply-build and alternative energy solutions for tilt-up buildings, we are driven to find ways to reduce the cost of building ownership on each and every project.

With a growing staff of more than 100, LJB also has specialties in infrastructure and safety design and consulting, but our work in the tilt-up industry has always been a passion for the firm. “We’ve been providing structural design of tilt-up building shells and wall panels since 1971,” LJB principal and past TCA president David Tomasula said. “Still, finding innovative ways to translate an owner’s idea into reality is an ongoing challenge, as the industry continues to evolve and new visions stretch existing practices.”

HISTORY OF EXCELLENCE

With a portfolio of more than 1,500 tilt-up projects across the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean, LJB is a recognized leader in the industry. Each project is special and unique in its own way, and many in the firm’s history have been lifted up as award-worthy. To date, LJB has received 49 Tilt-Up Achievement Awards from TCA.

CSAllliance-MainCON/STEEL Alliance members—a select group of contractors that participate in LJB’s CON/STEEL Building Program—are creating so many innovative projects that the firm also started its own Building of the Year competition in the 1990s. Every other year, the program selects two noteworthy projects—one for achievement in architectural appeal and one for advancement through technical innovation. These award winners truly showcase the continual evolution of the tilt-up method.

COMMITMENT TO INNOVATION

Throughout its journey in the tilt-up industry, LJB has been a pioneer in many new techniques and technologies. “Even before most people realized you could build multi-story tilt-up, we were developing solutions to stand panels one on top of the other to reach heights of four stories in the late 1970s,” Tomasula said. “Working in tandem with our architectural and construction partners, our engineers have always risen to the next challenge.  Even today, as we are designing some of the first six-story tilt-up buildings in Texas, we are developing solutions to go even taller.” LJB has also been involved in many research and development projects that have led to new or improved tilt-up products, including patented connection devices, cast-in brick and block, integral insulation options and forming adhesives.

COMMITMENT TO THE INDUSTRY

As a founding and sustaining member of TCA, LJB has always recognized the value of contributing to the industry organization. “We truly believe that if the tilt-up industry succeeds, we succeed,” Tomasula said. “We know there is mutual benefit in promoting TCA’s endeavors, such as representing tilt-up interests on code bodies, educating design and construction professionals, and promoting the tilt-up product to building owners.”

To show its support of the organization, three of LJB’s staff members have served terms as TCA president in the past, and several individuals have held board and committee member positions. In further support of the industry, LJB personnel have also been instrumental in the creation of industry design and construction guides through the American Concrete Institute, and have participated in research on the tilt-up method’s force protection characteristics.

“LJB’s core values are quality, integrity and service,” Tomasula said. “I feel like we’ve served the tilt-up industry with these values in mind—and I know that we, and the industry, are better for it.”
