TCA Supports Stronger Carbon Accounting Standards

The Tilt-Up Concrete Association, through its participation in the Alliance for Concrete Codes and Standards (ACCS), has submitted formal support for language in Section 6.6.1 of the ASHRAE 240P draft standard. Developed under ASHRAE (the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) leadership, the standard establishes a unified framework for greenhouse gas accounting across all building systems and materials, including structural systems such as tilt-up concrete.
Section 6.6.1 specifically reinforces the importance of verifiable data in biogenic carbon accounting. TCA supports the position that favorable carbon treatment (such as the +/- methodology) must be tied to third-party certification of sustainable sourcing, rather than assumed based on national trends. This ensures that life cycle assessments reflect actual procurement practices and allows for fair comparison among materials.
“This standard is enabling building owners to have a unified, standardized process to refer to for greenhouse gas accounting—both embodied and operational,” said Erika Winters-Downey, SE, LEED AP BD+C, director of Structural Quality & Sustainability at Clayco Design & Engineering, and chair of the TCA Sustainability Committee. “It helps eliminate confusion about what pollution sources are included and excluded from life cycle analyses and greenhouse gas accounting procedures.”
TCA will continue advocating for transparency and methodological rigor in environmental reporting to ensure tilt-up construction is evaluated on a fair and accurate basis.
