Shaping Earth Mock-Up Film Wins Viddy Award

Documentary captures Tilt Lab’s early study of earth-formed tilt-up geometry.

The Tilt-Up Concrete Association is pleased to share that the short documentary Shaping Earth Mock-Up, produced as part of Tilt Lab’s early research into double-curvature tilt-up construction, has been recognized with a Viddy Award in the Non-Broadcast / Long-Form Videos (over 3 minutes) – Nonprofit category.

The film documents the reduced-scale earth-formed mock-up created as a preliminary study for the full-scale prototypes later constructed at the 2024 Tilt-Up Convention & Expo in Phoenix. Serving as an experimental ground for material behavior, geometric control, and construction sequencing, the mock-up allowed the project team to explore soil, stone, and concrete interactions before moving to the larger installation.

About the Project
The documentary examines the interplay of local geology and tilt-up construction through an exploration of soil compaction, rock placement, casting behavior, and early formwork shaping. Inspired by the erosive forces and material stratification of the Arizona landscape, the study reframes the structural and aesthetic capacities of tilt-up by investigating its inherent material potential at a smaller scale.
