The Tilt-Up Concrete Association is pleased to announce that the\u00a0Tilt-Up Convention & Expo Pavilion\u2014a full-scale experimental prototype developed through\u00a0Tilt Lab\u00a0for the 2024 TCA Convention & Expo in Phoenix\u2014has been selected by the jury of the\u00a02025 AIA Arizona Design Awards\u00a0as an award winner in the\u00a0Component Category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pavilion represents a significant advancement in tilt-up concrete research, demonstrating how the method\u2019s traditionally planar geometries can be expanded through the introduction of a\u00a0third dimension formed in compacted earth. This experimental approach\u2014coined\u00a0Opus Luteum\u2014uses local soil as a flexible, reusable forming surface capable of producing\u00a0double-curvature panels\u00a0that enhance both structural performance and architectural expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Challenging the Limits of Conventional Tilt-Up<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Tilt-up concrete is widely recognized for its speed, durability, and cost-efficiency, but the method has been historically limited to planar wall construction. The pavilion challenges this assumption by exploring how\u00a0earth as formwork\u2014one of the oldest and most fundamental building materials\u2014can be leveraged as an\u00a0environmentally sensitive mold-making system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By allowing the creation of custom curvatures without the need for complex or waste-intensive formwork, Opus Luteum extends the design potential of tilt-up beyond traditional envelopes. The resulting double-curved surfaces increase stiffness, improve load distribution, and open new avenues for expressive, high-performance concrete assemblies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Project Goals and Collaborative Design Process<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Commissioned by\u00a0Tilt Lab, the philanthropic arm of the Tilt-Up Concrete Association, the pavilion was conceived as a way to demonstrate the versatility of tilt-up concrete as a\u00a0high-performance building envelope\u00a0and to foreground the method\u2019s compatibility with advanced architectural geometry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The client\u2019s brief emphasized:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
