Let me begin with Thank You!\u00a0 I feel privileged to be leading the TCA for the next 18 months.\u00a0 I also want to thank Glenn Doncaster for all his hard work and efforts these past 18 months. With his passion and dedication to the growth of tilt-up, he will be a tough act to follow.<\/p>\n
For those of you that do not know me, I have been actively involved in the concrete construction industry for over 25 years.\u00a0 I am President of AH Harris & Sons, Inc., a construction supply distributor with over 40 locations in 11 states.\u00a0\u00a0 Since the beginning of my career, I have been a proponent of tilt-up; it fascinates me that anything you can form, you can pour.<\/p>\n
I am very fortunate to begin my position during the Golden Age.\u00a0 The Greeks first defined the Golden Age as a period of peace, harmony and prosperity.\u00a0\u00a0 Sounds good, right?\u00a0 The opportunities are there!\u00a0 But if we think we can sit and wait for them to be dropped into our lap, we are mistaken.\u00a0 We have a sign that hangs above my husband\u2019s hockey gear: \u201cGood things come to those who wait, as long as those who wait are working like hell while they wait.\u201d<\/p>\n
2013 got off to a slow start primarily due to a mild hangover from the fiscal cliff as well as winter weather conditions across the United States.\u00a0 Both McGraw Hill & PCA are forecasting growth for 2013 with even greater momentum in 2014.<\/p>\n
It is time for us to power forward.<\/p>\n
Power forward is an actual position in basketball. The position is referred to in playbook terms as the \u201cfour\u201d position and is commonly abbreviated \u201cPF.\u201d\u00a0 It has also been referred to as the \u201cpost\u201d position. Power forwards play a role similar to that of center in what is called the \u201cpost\u201d or \u201clow blocks.\u201d They typically play offensively with their backs towards the basket and position themselves defensively under the basket in a zone defense or against the opposing power forward in man-to-man defense. The power forward position entails a variety of responsibilities. Many power forwards are noted for their mid-range jump-shot.<\/p>\n
As Michael Jordan said, \u201cObstacles don\u2019t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don\u2019t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Day in and day out we all play many positions and assume a variety of responsibilities. Everyone needs to remain alert, defensively protecting our baskets and preventing the competition from scoring. Have your blocks ready. Is your company Tilt-Up Certified?\u00a0 As Bill Russell said, \u201cThe idea is not to block every shot. The idea is to make your opponent believe that you might block every shot.\u201d<\/p>\n
Every associate must also play offensively going after each and every project to score the maximum number of points. Do not be afraid to shoot the ball. Michael Jordan said, \u201cYou have to expect things of yourself before you can do them.\u201d It should not matter who is guarding you \u2013 tall, short, older, younger \u2013 just put the ball up.\u00a0 The best way to do this is to be up to date with the latest trends and technologies.\u00a0 There is no better place to do this than at the upcoming TCA Convention in Houston.\u00a0 This year\u2019s event promises to be the best ever!<\/p>\n
