The results were ambitious, inventive, and often sculptural. More importantly, they demonstrated the potential of the Medley itself—not as a fixed competition, but as a platform capable of exploring a different dimension of tilt-up each year.

In Salt Lake City, that platform takes its next form.

Mock-Up Medley: The Art of Finish will bring 20 architectural mock-up panels to the 2026 Tilt-Up Convention and Expo, transforming the Medley into a curated exhibit focused on one of the most consequential—and demanding—aspects of architectural tilt-up: finish.

The premise is deliberately more disciplined. Instead of asking teams simply what they want to create, the program asks a series of specific questions about how concrete surfaces, materials, edges, transitions, and details can be resolved with greater control.

Twenty panels. A common format. Twenty architectural studies.

From Surface to Architecture

The panels are organized into four categories that create a progression through increasingly complex finish conditions.

Field Studies begin with the fundamentals: continuous surfaces where there is nowhere for inconsistency to hide. Exposed aggregate, integral color, polished concrete, and applied coatings challenge teams to demonstrate uniformity and control across an uninterrupted field.

Condition Studies move to the places where architectural intent becomes more difficult to maintain. How does an exposed aggregate surface terminate against smooth concrete? How should a formliner pattern end? What happens when thin brick reaches an opening or turns a corner? These panels concentrate on edges, transitions, and terminations—conditions where otherwise successful finishes can lose their clarity.

Comparative Studies place related approaches alongside one another. Light and heavy aggregate exposure, polished and honed surfaces, seamless and intentionally expressed formliner joints, and different treatments of embedded materials allow attendees to see how execution decisions alter the perception of the same fundamental material.

Finally, Integrated Studies examine the relationship between finish and form. Embedded materials, relief and depth, integral protrusions, and curvature move beyond treatment of the surface to explore conditions in which material and geometry become part of the architectural expression itself.

Together, the categories turn the exhibit into a built material study rather than a collection of unrelated showpieces.

Attendees examine the material, surface, and geometric expression of Mock-Up Medley entries at the 2025 Tilt-Up Convention and Expo in Nashville.

A Common Canvas

Standardization is an important part of the experiment. The panels are approximately four feet wide by eight feet tall and between four and six inches thick, creating a consistent format across the exhibit.

Within that framework, considerable room remains for craft.

Each panel establishes a condition that must be clearly demonstrated and resolved. Contractors can then explore material selection, mix design, finish techniques, detailing, proportion, composition, and presentation in pursuit of that intent.

Simple changes in geometry create additional architectural questions. A return can reveal what happens when a finish turns a corner. An opening can test how a material resolves at an edge. Multiple finishes can meet within a single panel and expose the importance of transition and alignment.

The constraint is intentional. By reducing variation in the basic canvas, attention moves toward the quality of the resolution.

The inaugural Medley encouraged highly expressive, often sculptural work. In Salt Lake City, the program builds on that creative foundation with a more focused study of architectural finish.

Designed Through Shared Expertise

The development of this year’s Medley has expanded the number of disciplines involved in shaping the work.

Architectural input helped frame the exhibit around conditions worth studying rather than products worth displaying. Contractors then take responsibility for translating those ideas into concrete, bringing the realities of forming, placing, finishing, and detailing to each problem.

Suppliers have a particularly important role in this iteration. Contractors are encouraged to engage TCA member suppliers and other technical partners whose materials and expertise can help achieve the desired result. Rather than existing alongside the exhibit as promotion, supplier knowledge becomes visible through the quality of the built work itself.

That distinction matters. A successful formliner panel is not simply evidence of a product. It demonstrates pattern selection, layout, joint strategy, forming, concrete placement, stripping, and workmanship acting together. The same is true of thin brick, exposed aggregate, coatings, polishing, embedded materials, and nearly every other finish represented.

The outcome depends on shared expertise.

Built in Salt Lake City

Five Utah contractors—Big-D Construction, Frontline Concrete Contracting, Hughes General Contractors, Suntec Concrete, and Tom Stuart Construction—have committed to executing the 20 panels, with each taking responsibility for four studies. Collectively, their selections span exposed aggregate, integral color, coatings, thin brick, formliners, embedded materials, and three-dimensional surface conditions.

That concentration of local expertise is one of the reasons Salt Lake City is particularly suited to this iteration of the Medley. Architectural tilt-up is deeply established in the region, providing an opportunity not simply to bring an exhibit to Utah, but to draw upon the knowledge of the market hosting it.

The finished collection should therefore reveal more than what can be done to the face of a concrete panel. It should expose the decisions, coordination, and craftsmanship required to carry architectural intent through construction.

And attendees will be asked to look closely.

Recognition will include Resolution of Condition, Craft and Execution, Material Expression, and People’s Choice, inviting the Convention audience to consider not simply which panel they prefer, but what makes a finish successful.

Part of the Demo Experience

Mock-Up Medley: The Art of Finish is part of the larger Demo Experience at the 2026 Tilt-Up Convention and Expo, where attendees can move beyond the seminar room to encounter materials, technologies, construction methods, and technical questions through direct demonstration and built work.

The Demo Experience is made possible through the support of Dayton Superior Corporation, Robert Bosch Tool Corp., y Gorra blanca. Their support helps create space within the Convention for this kind of hands-on exploration, bringing contractors, suppliers, designers, and attendees together around the physical realities of tilt-up construction.

Explore the 2026 Demo Experience >

The Art of Finish

There is an appealing simplicity to the experiment.

Twenty panels share roughly the same dimensions. Each begins with a defined architectural condition. Each is executed by people who understand the realities of tilt-up construction. And each becomes an opportunity to examine one question in built form rather than discussing it abstractly.

Collectively, they also express the idea behind this year’s Convention: Shared Ascent.

Architects help articulate intent. Engineers establish a safe and repeatable framework. Suppliers contribute material knowledge and technical expertise. Contractors turn those ideas into built work. Attendees complete the process by examining, comparing, questioning, and carrying what they learn back into practice.

No single panel needs to demonstrate everything tilt-up can become.

Together, they can move the conversation forward.

Veinte paneles estandarizados, cuatro categorías de estudio y cinco contratistas de Utah convierten el Mock-Up Medley de 2026 en una exploración construida de acabados, expresión material, detalles y oficio

 Leer más…

[734,366,480
749,649,442,868,550,699,554,485,867,410
post-20608","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-tca-events","category-architecture-design","category-system-evaluation-decision-making","tag-2026-tilt-up-convention-and-expo","tag-architectural-concrete","tag-architectural-tilt-up","tag-concrete-finishes","tag-demo-experience","tag-mock-up-medley","tag-salt-lake-city","tag-shared-ascent","tag-the-art-of-finish","tag-tilt-up-construction
["GET
