Tilt Lab, the philanthropic partner of the Tilt-Up Concrete Association, has connected Washington University\u2019s Pablo Moyano, assistant professor of architecture, and the design team of Eric Sterner and Brad Lang of LAST Architects to explore an architectural potential for tilt-up concrete construction while celebrating the culture and landscape of Arizona as part of the 25th Tilt-Up Convention and Expo to be held in Phoenix, Arizona, on October 9\u201311, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the project is in its early stages of design, the team is exploring themes related to the use of local materials in forming panels, including the potential use of soil and rock as formwork. They are also examining how these materials can inform and become the surface of the panels, integrating elements from the region directly into the construction.<\/p>\n\n\n

Another theme under consideration is erosion, a natural force that has shaped many of Arizona\u2019s most recognizable landscapes. The design team is exploring how the concept of erosion could influence the geometry of the panels and the interaction of light and shadow within the structure, aiming to create spaces that resonate with the natural beauty and history of the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Central to this exploration is the expertise of Guillermo Valdez and his team at Suntec Concrete. Their experience with using organic materials in tilt-up construction provides valuable insights into the practical application of these methods, including how the use of soil and other natural elements can align with the efficiency and economy of tilt-up construction, which allows the method\u2019s advantages to be maintained while exploring new creative possibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
