Nearly six hundred<\/strong> of the tilt-up industry\u2019s brightest gathered on September 27, 2019 to honor those organizations, people and projects that have successfully illustrated the variety, beauty and flexibility of tilt-up construction. The Tilt-Up Awards Gala, sponsored by Nox-Crete, was held at the world-famous Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, where attendees celebrated alongside whale sharks (the largest fish in the sea), massive manta rays and playful beluga whales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Awards presented during this event included the Alphonse Engelman Safety Awards, Tilt-Up Achievement Awards and the TCA Professional Awards. We also inducted new members to the TCA College of Fellows. All of this year\u2019s winners will be featured extensively in the big awards issue of Tilt-Up Today, which will be distributed during World of Concrete in Las Vegas this winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beth Malicki, an Emmy-winning journalist, advocate for youth, and skilled communicator with a passion for harnessing the power of communities, served as the evening\u2019s emcee. Referred to as the \u201cmillennial whisperer\u201d by past-president Jeffrey Brown, FTCA, Beth was instrumental in launching the TCA\u2019s new young professional collaborative at the beginning of 2019 and was in Atlanta to continue her work with them through the convention. She opened the event by sharing how similar the priorities of this next generation are with those of our current leadership, and she reinforced the theme that we are all more alike than we are different. She emphasized that their eagerness to participate is not to be taken for granted. \u201cMillennials are bailing on legacy groups and disrupting industries like TV news, golf and department stores,\u201d she said. \u201cBut they are knocking on TCA\u2019s door and that is rare. That is extraordinary.\u201d She continued, \u201cThe record breaking numbers at this year\u2019s Tilt-Up Convention and Expo and the launch of TCA\u2019s Young Professionals Collaborative speaks to the health and vibrance of what you have created in this room.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attendees had a front row seat as we unveiled the industry\u2019s most impressive applications of the tilt-up method. The TCA\u2019s manager for regulatory and technical affairs shared his passion for the TCA\u2019s safety awards program and we celebrated the extraordinary efforts of the Atlanta Host Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were very special moments throughout the evening, including the presentation of this year\u2019s David L. Kelly Distinguished Engineer Award to Scott Collins, P.E., Meadow Burke\u2019s chief tilt-up engineer. The award was presented by Scott\u2019s mentor and the honor\u2019s namesake himself, David Kelly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We presented Robert F. Murray, Architekton and TAS Commercial Concrete with prestigious professional honors, recognizing their impactful contributions to the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The TCA said thank you to past president Tim Manherz for his leadership, passion and dedication to this association over the last eight or nine years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Four new members were inducted into the TCA College of Fellows, including Jim Baty, FTCA; Jeffrey Brown, FTCA; Barclay Gebel, FTCA; and Ed McGuire, FTCA. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, Shawn Hickey, FTCA presented this year\u2019s Peter Courtois Memorial Award (the TCA\u2019s highest honor) to Clay Fischer, FTCA in a surprisingly G-rated and appropriately emotional tribute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The evening ended with the President\u2019s After Party sponsored by Meadow Burke where friends, colleagues, and family posed for photos with their awards, grabbed one last drink, and took one last look at those enormous while sharks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
