Tilt-up panels are used in almost all types of commercial construction in Florida, an area that is frequently hit by hurricanes. This presentation explores why the panel system is an obvious choice for high wind and storm regions.
Mr. Johnson will review wind definitions, how engineers compute wind pressures for designing buildings, and untangle the nuances between the Saffir - Simpson scale, ultimate wind pressures and allowable wind pressures. Using buildings that were featured on the building tour as examples, details will be explained about connecting the panels to the structure to make the walls a part of the building system as a whole. Through examples, Johnson will also explore what a "Category 5" building design may look like, and the concerns behind designing such a robust building including flood issues and flood design.
