Performance Linear Elastic Design using Based Modulus of Rupture Testing

September 28, 2019 from 1:30pm to 2:30pm Eastern Standard Time

M103-105

Luke Pinkerton

While “structural plain concrete” is used throughout the concrete, it could contain components specifically designed to increase the modulus of rupture of the concrete. ACI 322 developed the basic approaches in the 1970s. There has been little work in this area since. There have been significant developments, however, in products that can enhance the properties of plain concrete. These simple linear elastic approaches will be applied to a subset of tilt walls that can sustain ultimate design loads while remaining elastic. While application of this mode of design is limited, it has been proven successful in over 1000 panels incorporating HelixR and provides significant economy over traditional methods. This method was demonstrated at the 2018 TCA Convention in Dallas. In this session we will cover, in detail, the plain structural concrete design, modulus of rupture testing, ASCE-7 performance based design principles behind the 2018 demo. We will invite a discussion at the end about how these principles if adopted on a wide scale would change the business from the perspective of a contractor, engineer, ready mix concrete producer and code official.
