2020 Tilt-Up Convention and Expo

From California to New Jersey, Florida to Colorado and everywhere in between, the Tilt-Up Convention and Expo has brought the industry together for 3-days of education, networking, awards, exhibits, demos, tours and much more! As we all know, 2020 has presented challenges that have overwhelmed business owners and employees across the globe, disrupted the way we operate, and put a complete halt on our ability to gather together…or has it?

The 2020 Tilt-Up Convention and Expo brought the industry together unlike ever before. In partnership with White Cap, Meadow Burke and numerous other event sponsors, this year’s event introduced attendees to a whole new world, The Aggregate. The Aggregate is an avatar based, revolutionary virtual events destination designed for gatherings both large and small. Complete with numerous auditoriums, classrooms, meeting rooms, office space, a beach, an expandable expo hall and much more, The Aggregate is a turnkey solution for a truly virtual event experience and allowed us to gather together regardless of the challenges that this year has presented.

“This year, we couldn’t be together.” said Mitch Bloomquist, executive director of the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA). “But we were,” said Bloomquist. “We were the community. Despite being spread across the globe. Despite the unrelenting grip of this pandemic. Despite the financial hardships. We were the community.”

Presented by White Cap and Meadow Burke, the 2020 Tilt-Up Convention and Expo produced the highest registration numbers to date, and successfully brought the tilt-up community together, virtually, for a full week of education, exhibits, jobsite tours, awards, networking and much more. “This community is our most cherished asset,” said Bloomquist. “The education, innovation, and growth all come from it, and don’t exist without it.”

Complete with over 20 hours of education, 6 virtual jobsite tours, 11 live product demonstrations, numerous on-demand sessions, an awards program and an expo hall full of the latest products and technology the industry has to offer, this year’s virtual event attracted over 800 attendees from nearly 250 companies across the globe. With The Aggregate’s avatar-based platform, attendees were able to have an actual presence at the event and effectively communicate with each other as they roamed from the auditorium to the expo hall, and the classrooms to the beach.

“By hosting the Convention and Expo in this interactive virtual environment, the TCA offered a wonderful solution to the question of how to meet together in this challenging year,” said Rick Galloway, executive vice president of Martin Construction. “Hosting the event in this way filled an important void, by allowing people to meet ‘face to face’ as individuals, and be part of larger interactive ‘groups’ through avatars,” said Galloway. “This gave us the sense of community we all love about the TCA while respecting the need to keep everyone safe.”

The event kicked-off on Monday, Oct. 5 with several orientation classes which allowed attendees to dig deeper into the platform and learn more about their avatar’s ability to communicate and navigate throughout the virtual campus, a foot-race, soccer games and a series of virtual job-site tours and on-demand sessions were available as well.

Education began on day two and included a keynote by Barclay Gebel of Concrete Strategies, and exhibits dedicated to saving time, money and lives.

Day three continued with valuable education, a Keynote sponsored by Innovative Structural Solutions, exhibit hours dedicated to architectural finishes, and concluded with the 2020 Tilt-Up Awards Gala, followed by the President’s After Party on the beach, with entertainment by The Pork Tornados.

Education resumed on day four with a keynote by Jeffrey Brown of Powers Brown Architecture, and 11 exhibiting companies presented product demonstrations in the expo hall foyer, attracting attendees from across the globe to better understand their products.

The event wrapped up on day five and was designed specifically for international attendees. Tilt-Up 101 was presented in Spanish, and exhibitors were encouraged to have bi-lingual staff available as well.

“What a great week! Exactly the spark I needed to get out from under this cloud,” said Raymond Elias, concrete operations manager at Oltmans Construction Co. “It is so refreshing to be amongst those who speak your language, understand the challenges, and who I can continue to learn new ideas, innovations and trends from.”

Although we all look forward to our ability to gather in-person again, it is undeniable that this year’s event proved the importance of showing up. Regardless of the circumstances, the industry’s most influential companies and professionals showed up open minded and eager to learn. “Now you know, it’s worth it,” said Bloomquist. “It’s inspiring. It’s energizing. Now you know, it’s not to be missed.”
