Tilt-Up Provides Speed And Efficiency For A Company On The Move American Tire – Londonderry, NH

Since 1935 American Tire Distributors has supported the nation’s tire dealers, service repair shops, and automotive performance shops with prompt and convenient delivery of the products, tools, and programs they need to service a country on the move. American Tire provides their customers with a complete package of tires, custom wheels, service equipment, shop supplies, and a full complement of business resources needed to meet the challenge of an increasingly demanding and competitive retail landscape. When it was time to build their next distribution facility in Londonderry, NH, American Tire wanted the same quality service from their Contractor.

BC Construction Group is a relatively new company but has associates on their staff with numerous years of tilt-up experience and long standing relationships in the concrete construction industry.  It is these relationships that brought American Tire, BC Group and Seretta together.

“We haven’t done much work in the northeast.  More or less we were following a client of ours, but working with AH Harris went well overall.”  David Peltier, Project Manager, Seretta Construction Mid-Atlantic, LLC.

BC Construction Group and Seretta Construction met the requirements of American Tire with a complete tilt-up design build package.  The tilt-up facility satisfied all of American Tire’s needs: compressed construction schedule, hard wall design, sustainability and flexibility.

Eric Moore, Project Manager/Superintendent of BC Construction Group knew tilt-up was right for this project because of the compressed schedule.  “We wanted to go with tilt-up construction because of the speed and efficiency.”

The total building area was 125,000 sf with 4,485 sf of office space and the remainder of the facility, 120,575 sf, a large clear span warehouse with 48 truck dock doors.

BC Construction Group and Seretta promised speed, and speed is what they delivered.  Site excavation began on June 5th; foundations followed less than 10 days later.  The first slab poured two weeks later just before the 4th of July holiday.  65 wall panels were formed and poured in just days.

Panel erection began August 8th, two months from the project start date.

The largest panel was 43’ 11” tall x 26’ 11 5/8” wide weighing in at 121,470 lbs.   In order to accommodate the tallest panels 47’ 11”, and the widest panel 31’ 10 7/8”, Seretta utilized a 220-ton crawler crane.

In designing the lifting and bracing for these panels it was crucial to utilize as much of the existing structural steel as possible.  Due to the existing structural reinforcing in the face, no added rebar was necessary to accommodate the concrete stresses.  The reveal pattern on these panels consisted of both vertical and horizontal reveals which made it essential to have a good rigging pattern to eliminate any horizontal stresses.  With A.H. Harris and Meadow Burke’s expertise we were able to complete this job with zero added reinforcing bar, making the bottom line on this project that much better.

This was the first time Meadow Burke had teamed up with Serretta’s northeast division and they wanted to show Seretta the benefits of utilizing them for their tilt-up buildings.  The project was fast paced; Meadow Burke completed the panels design in just four days to ensure that Seretta could meet their deadlines to keep the project on track. Meadow Burke’s Engineer, Ernie Garcia, indicated that “This project is a perfect example of how tilt-up is a more efficient, more economical, and faster paced way of construction making it a win-win situation for everyone involved.”

Together the team provided American Tire Distributors the complete package to meet the challenge of an increasingly demanding and competitive landscape, and they did so in the same manner American Tire supplies their customers, with prompt convenient delivery which is needed to service a country on the move.
