The BJC at the Commons five-story administrative office building pushes the limits of tilt-up design. The innovative design is comprised of tilt-up panels set to the height of the fifth floor window sill. A concrete spandrel panel framed in steel encloses the top of the building above a continuous ribbon of glass. The building BJC Healthcare's first tilt-up project.

Punched window opening were carved from the concrete panels on the north and south elevations, providing a unique rhythm to the facade while controlling daylight to the interior. The building takes full advantage of the large punched windows to minimize the need for interior lighting. A lighting power density of 0.6 watts per square foot was achieved, which is well below the 0.9 watts per square foot required in the energy code.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
