Insulated Composite Panels: Bringing Tilt-Up Back to the Northeast

Presenters: Robert Murray - Vice President/General Manager at Alston Construction, Mark Hugeback - Owner of M+H Architects, Mitch McCaulley - North American Sales Director at Thermomass
Date and time: Friday, September 29 - 3:00p to 5:00p

A common misconception - that tilt-up construction is only suited for southern climates where weather is favorable and labor is inexpensive - has long been perpetuated by many competing industries. Advocates for the masonry, precast, and steel industries have long advanced the narrative that tilt-up construction is ill equipped to cost-effectively meet energy code requirements in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and other northern states.

This notion is demonstrably false, though it often takes real-world example to convince developers, designers and owners. Over the past three years, Alston Construction, M+H Architects and Thermomass have built such a portfolio to illustrate that tilt-up can be the preferred method of construction in a region once thought to be most challenging for the industry to gain market share.

Through the course of this two hour session, Mitch McCaulley (Thermomass), Bob Murray (Alston Construction), and Mark Hugeback (M+H) will illustrate the advantages of a load-bearing, structurally composite wall panel design that is code-compliant, constructible and cost advantageous to even the most price conscious developer.

The presenting team will examine the design, scheduling and construction of these tilt-up wall panels and then lead a discussion on how their firms have been able to convert traditional designs to this innovative solution. Examples will focus primarily on success stories from the Northeast, but additional attention will be directed toward similar designs in Washington, California and Colorado to address how the design can been applied to markets across North America.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
