Training New Crews, Cultivating a Tilt-Up Workforce

Tilt-up construction, with the amount of work performed onsite, employees a great deal of field labor including carpenters, laborers, ironworkers, and finishers. While there is a great deal knowledge that is transferable from one building system to another, the construction of a tilt-up building requires a specific skill set that many workers may not already have.

This seminar will cover a variety of issues related to the training of new hires for work in the tilt-up industry. Hickey will walk through the various trades on a typical tilt-up jobsite and point out the specific skills needed to get the job done efficiently, safely and correctly.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify desirable experience for new hires.
  • Understand how work on a tilt-up panel different from simple flatwork, cast-in-place concrete or masonry.
  • Become familiar with tools/machinery that could be new to a laborer entering the tilt-up industry.
  • Locate training resources are available for tilt-up construction.
  • Understand safety issues unique to a tilt-up jobsite.

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
