Stacked: Two Approaches to Multistory Tilt-Up

Session: 2-1

Date/Time: Tuesday, September 29 from 9:00 to 11:00 am

Location: Regency Ballroom

Panel Discussion

Overview

This is NOT a seminar about casting panels one on top of another. This IS a seminar covering the practice of vertically stacking tilt-up wall panels top to bottom to create multistory tilt-up structures.

Many times crane availability or bracing technology can lead a team to utilize stacked panels. Occasionally site constraints or structural considerations will suggest this direction. Either way, there are two major options when choosing this method. Both have been around for a very long time, both have their advantages and disadvantages and both remain relatively underutilized by the greater tilt-up industry.

Stacked, loadbearing panels and stacked non-loadbearing cladding panels will be discussed by two separate panels of experts during this two-hour seminar. Projects utilizing both of these methods will be reviewed and the benefits of employing each method will be explored.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the differences in construction and engineering of stacked loadbearing panels and stacked non-loadbearing cladding panels.
  • Identify the benefits of vertically stacking panels.
  • Understand the various forming, pouring and lifting sequences for multistory tilt-up buildings utilizing stacked panels.
  • Identify the impact of stacked loadbearing panels and stacked non-loadbearing cladding panels on the structure as a whole.
  • Recognize the opportunity for stacked panels on a wide variety of building types and situations.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
