Concrete and Abstract

Session: 3-4

Date/Time: Thursday, October 1 from 12:00 to 1:30 pm

Location: Regency Ballroom

Speaker: Tod Williams and Billie Tsien

Overview

In our work we have always used concrete as a primary material because it is long lasting and because it can be transformed in so many ways - from the smoothness of terrazzo grinding to the revealing of aggregate that occurs with heavy sandblasting.

While our primary experience has been with cast-in-place concrete and precast panels, through the design and construction of the Hurricane Sandy Memorial Pavilion, we have begun to explore the tilt-up process. In the past few months we have learned that tilt-up offers efficiency and speed, as well as quality and control of construction.

During this talk we will elaborate on this experience and our understating of these different approaches to working with concrete.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
